Romania’s first “fake true-crime” thriller follows the reopening of a case file on unsolved murders in a provincial town. Fifteen years after four murders committed in the vicinity of the same school, two documentary filmmakers return to the case to find out what really happened. The investigation uncovers contradictory testimonies, false leads and a suspect who has been missing for years, while the myth of a satanic cult, fuelled by the press, seems to have hijacked the truth. As filming progresses, the investigation shifts away from the crime and toward a past marked by bullying, silence and complicity. When new evidence emerges, the questions become uncomfortable not only for the witnesses, but for those telling the storyas well. A film about unseen violence, the manipulation of narrative and the responsibility involved in turning trauma into spectacle, it challenges audiences to reflect critically on truth and on contemporary collective memory.

As Máté celebrates the birth of his son, his art teacher mother, Krisztina gradually loses her sight as a complication of diabetes. While reluctant to show vulnerability, she increasingly relies on Máté, who goes above and beyond to help his mother. When Máté’s family is about to move from the country, Máté has to make a choice, while Krisztina fears being left alone in the darkness.

Based on true events, Mayflies is the story of a famous Hungarian assassin from the 1930s – Pista Pipás. At his arrest, it is revealed that he was born a woman but lived as a man. In prison, while waiting for execution, he forms a relationship with Irma, a pastor’s daughter, who teaches him to read and write. Their relationship develops into a strong bond that results in clemency being granted for Pista, but at a heavy cost for Irma. Their ambiguous love story is still relevant 100 years later, when manipulation and corruption still affect our choices.

Each protagonist grapples with an initial problem – be it abortion, infertility or single parenting. However, their perceived solutions only create more complex conflicts. The story questions how free they truly are to live the lives they desire. Is it that society judges them for their choices, or is their self-made cage the real barrier?

She works in the Austrian capital as a teacher at the VHS school, teaching German to people from the Middle East, Africa and Asia who arrived in Europe as part of the 2015 wave of refugees. The love story that unfolds where Magda’sand the refugees’ lives intersect offers a glimpse into the world of different cultures.

György Kurtág, having turned 100 this year, is not only the most famous contemporary Hungarian composer, but also a unique phenomenon on the international stage. The genius, who lives in an attic flat at the Budapest Music Centre, is confined to a wheelchair, yet his mental acuity is undiminished. Making the most of the opportunities offered by the music centre, he spends his days working tirelessly. He is visited by the most respected musicians from around the world only so they can undergo a rigorous and humbling work process – one that is extremely demanding both mentally and professionally – in order to delve deeply, sometimes for several hours at a time, into a mere few minutes of a single piece.

Director Dénes Nagy, winner of the Silver Bear, offers a glimpse into the life of the great composer without showing the slightest interest in making a conventional biographical film. On screen, we see more than just a composer at work or surrounded by his family. Thanks to this documentary—conceived from the outset for the big screen, both grand in scale and yet deeply intimate—we gain a better understanding of the significance of contemporary art and the constant inner turmoil that plagues the greatest of artists.

The protagonist of this tragicomedy is Kristóf Méhn, a painter-cum-bank archivist who lives alongside his wife, Vera, in a ground floor flat of a residential block. The story takes place on the day Kristóf discovers black mould on the wall of their flat, and not much later finds out from Vera that they’re expecting a baby. He decides to discover the origins of the mould. While interviewing his previously unknown neighbours, he ends up in an increasingly bitter conflict with the mellifluous block manager, eager to push through a major lift-building project during the late afternoon residents’ meeting. As Kristóf becomes more and more embroiled in the affairs of the block, his suspicion mounts: there is something rotten in the block.

Marius is the chief medical officer at a hospital in his small hometown, raising a teenage son, Ioan, alone after the death of his wife. He is dedicated to his work, and has no idea what his son gets up to at night: cycling through town vandalising cars with a gang of masked teenagers. Marius’s world is shaken when he learns that the police have come to suspect his son of murder.
