RETUS 3 – Interventions in the Museum
Venue:
Palace of Culture – Hungarian Modern Art Gallery / B5 Studio
How does a museum fit into collective imagination? What does the past tell us when we remain silent about its objects and forget their creators? Who decides what is worth archiving, which stories are valuable, and how long they endure? And what does it take for an exhibition experience to ripple into our daily lives?
Once conceived as timeless vaults of objects and histories, museums are increasingly redefined as spaces for dialogue, reflection, and community. Building on this shift, the project RETUS 3 proposes to reimagine the museum space through the critical practices of contemporary art and inclusive education. Initiated by B5 Studio in collaboration with the Mureș County Museum, the project invites eleven contemporary artists to create site-specific interventions that challenge how we experience collections, what heritage means, and why museums matter today. Several themes intersect around the history of the collections, their preservation strategies, and the programs that have shaped them, as well as the parallel realities of cultural identities and the alienating narratives of imagined communities.
RETUS 3 Museum Interventions outlines an approach that interprets museums and art beyond their representational surfaces as spaces for critical and experimental knowledge production. In the context of a data and impact driven economic and political system, the manifold tools of contemporary art, design processes, and museum practices open up new constellations of forces.
The Documentary Exhibition opening at the B5 Studio venue welcomes visitors as an interactive space to learn about the museum and its network of relationships, as well as the artistic strategies for collecting, retrieving, and producing knowledge. These tools open up new configurations of institutional imagination, encouraging visitors to rethink the role of museums, art, and community with broader societal challenges and an uncertain and sometimes fragile world in mind. Can we learn to live with this imagination?
