Mario Damolin: CARPATHIAN KARMA – Germany, 2017 – 95’

In 1995 a German camera team accidentally met a young man called Joshka in his Romanian Carpathian village Bixad. Joshka had been attacked by a bear and critically wounded in 1989, when he was 17. He survived and was operated on 62 times in Romania and Hungary – but his mangled face could not be restored. The horrible pictures of Joshka in German TV led to a large-scale donation campaign, which allowed him to go for 12 more operations in Germany. After this, he returned to his village and has been living there since 1997 with his family. The documentary accompanies the life of a man from 1995 until 2016 in one of the most impoverished regions in Europe – between trauma and stigma and between hope and resignation.

Barna László: HANDS OF GOD – Hungary, 2020 – 71’

With trembling hands, old Csángáló is putting his violin into the case. For many years he had been a master of this instrument in the Romani Szászcsávás Band, but because of Parkinson’s disease he was dismissed from the group. For Dumnezeu, the band leader, it was not an easy decision. It could have been withdrawn if Csángáló had undergone a brain surgery. But he prefers to pass his bow on to his grandson, who can successfully continue the family tradition, and wait for a miracle.
