István Szabó: FINAL REPORT – Hungary, 2020 – 115’                                     


A renowned professor of cardiology, who in his youth wanted to be an opera singer, returns to his village after retirement to become the local GP. In the village he faces unresolved conflicts, the attitude of servitude, how rumours and fake news can manipulate general opinion, and the intricate network of interdependent relationships. The only person with whom he can share his troubles is his childhood classmate who is now the village priest. He clashes with the mayor of the village over a forest spring falsely claimed to have healing properties. He is so savagely attacked over the issue that he decides to leave the village. He needs to seek another path to survive and finally fulfils his youthful ambition of finding himself through music and song.

Emi, a school teacher, finds her reputation under threat after a personal sex tape is uploaded onto the internet. Forced to meet the parents demanding her dismissal, Emi refuses to surrender. Bad Luck Banging or Loony Porn is a film in three loosely connected parts: a walk in the city of Bucharest, then a playful essay on obscenities, all culminating, in the third part, in an incendiary comic confrontation.

Gábor Herendi: TOXIKOMA – Hungary, 2021 – 124’                             


Toxikoma is based on the memoirs of Győző Szabó in which the two lead characters, a drug addict alpha male and Dr Imre Csernus, a psychiatrist playing God, flex their muscles, challenge each other and finally become friends. The story outlines the most difficult years of a young man moving from the countryside to Budapest, for years falling further and further in the world of drugs.

Hungarian obstetrician Bálint Grassai left his native village in Maramureș, Romania many years ago to attend medical school in Budapest. He also left behind a son he never met, the result of a short affair with a local woman. At Easter, when Bálint returns to bury his father, he is faced with deciding the fate of his abandoned son. Simon is now a self-destructive and rebellious 17-year-old, beholden to local gang leader Dumitru. On the cusp of becoming a father again, Bálint is wrenched back into the stark and unforgiving world he left behind.

Her world is turned upside down when a former student of hers, the beautiful Albán, suddenly shows up. Albán is a woman, but that's not the only problem with her. Her presence prompts questions about the past, present, and future. Reality, memories and dreams intermingle, and the old family roles slowly begin to change.

World War II, occupied Soviet Union. István Semetka is a simple Hungarian farmer who serves as a Sub-Lieutenant in a special unit scouting for illegal partisan groups. On their way to a remote village, his company fell under enemy fire. As the commander is killed, Semetka has to overcome his fear and take command of the unit, being dragged into a chaos that he cannot control.

Radu Muntean: ÎNTREGALDE – Romania, 2021 – 104’

Maria, Dan and Ilinca take part in their regular end-of-the-year humanitarian trip, driving an SUV along the mountain dirt roads of the Romanian village of Întregalde. They help a lonely old man reach a sawmill where he supposedly works, but when their car gets stuck in a ditch in the woods the old man continues his journey on foot. Later, the three learn that the sawmill is actually abandoned and that the old man has dementia. The night is near and it's freezing, what should they do?

Lucian Pintilie: THE OAK (4K restored version) – Romania/France, 1992 – 105’

The Oak (1992), directed by Lucian Pintilie, is the first Romanian movie digitally restored in 4K by BRD – Groupe Société Générale and Fundația9. The restoration process took more than 6 months and targeted the improvement of image and sound quality and converting film to digital. The movie tells the story of a young female teacher and a male doctor from a local hospital trying to cope with the last days of communism and fighting for normality in a stereotype-driven Romania.
