Barnabás Tóth: THOSE WHO REMAINED – Hungary, 2019 84’

After WWII, in Budapest, a lonely man and an orphan teenage girl find their way back to life through love. ALDO is 42, lost his wife and two children in the camps but keeping himself together while working as a gynecologist. KLÁRA is 16, still hasn’t got her period yet. She is still waiting her father and mother back from… well, she only knows they are “war prisoners”. Her grandma takes her to see a gynecologist, dr. Aladár (Aldo). The two of them find something in each other that they’ve been missing for years. As they get closer and closer, they both get better and better. But as the Communist Party and the Soviet Empire takes over Hungary, their loving and pure father-daughter relationship is not well seen anymore…

Corneliu Porumboiu: LA GOMERA – Romania/France/Germany, 2019 – 93’

Cristi, a corrupt Romanian police officer involved in a 30-million-euro deal with the mob, arrives in La Gomera Island in Spain to learn El Silbo, a whistled language used by the locals. The code will help him free Zsolt, a smuggler held in prison back in Bucharest, and the only one from the gang who knows where the money is hidden.

While wallowing in self-pity, Tamás takes a trip down memory lane to figure out if love only exists when it's practically gone. As he's trying to pick up the pieces, he begins to realize what makes this current society so confused, which gives us a highly subjective view of Hungary's present.

Alexis Sweet Cahill: QUEEN MARIE OF ROMANIA – Romania, 2019 – 90’


In 1916 Romania entered the war on the side of the Allied Powers, driven by a desire to reunite its fractured provinces into one united state. Due to a fierce German invasion, the Romanian government was forced into signing a humiliating treaty with Germans. However, this treaty was never ratified by King Ferdinand. Devastated by war and plunged into political controversy, Romania’s hope for its great unification seems lost. When all the odds were against them and the nation needed all the help it could get to achieve its dream, Queen Marie of Romania joined forces with politicians.

A peculiar series of robberies shakes the most famous museums in the world: a mysterious gang is stealing the most valuable paintings one after another. Despite all security measures, nothing can stop the Collector and his team from stealing new paintings, and the police are helpless. Only Kowalski, a private detective from Washington, notices a common thread connecting all of the stolen masterpieces, but his life is endangered when he falls in love with the femme fatale of the gang, Mimi.

György Pálfi: HIS MASTER’S VOICE  – Hungary/Canada, 2018 – 108’

Our main character, Péter, is in his late thirties when he thinks he recognizes his father in a documentary about a mysterious accident. His father had deserted from Communist Hungary in the 70s, a criminal offense under that regime, and had not been heard of since. Péter travels to America and, after an eventful investigation, finds his father and his new family. The reunion brings plenty of experiences and teaches several lessons to both son and father. Also, as a consequence, the world is informed that the silent universe has spoken, and we are not alone.

Their passion, oblivious to anyone and anything, will soon be tested by the challenges they must face together. Love and literature will save Adrian.

Will she be able to save what’s fragile and unique in her life?
